The SH 121 Bypass, traverses from Grapevine east through The Colony, just south of old SH 121, now designated SH 121 Business, was conceived in 1985; over 15 years ago by the State Highway 121 Task Force which is led by Denton County Commissioner Sandy Jacobs with representatives from the cities along the bypass corridor (Grapevine, Coppell, Lewisville, Carrollton and The Colony). The alignment study and schematic design for this facility were completed and approved in 1989. Design and construction of the service roads was started shortly thereafter. Construction began in 1995 and the facility was opened to traffic in 1999. Economic growth along the corridor has accelerated the need for the main lane construction. Funding is being established; design is underway; and completion of the freeway is projected to be late 2006.
